Research and Development of Design of Bag
I researched on natural and synthetic fibres to see which type of fibre was more suitable for my laptop bag. Below are some of the materials I evaluated.
In conclusion, I think linen, corduroy or cotton would be the most suitable material to use for my laptop bag as they are soft but strong, so that the bag will not scratch my laptop, and will also not tear easily.
Design Specifications
I will use the bag to hold my laptop for when I bring my laptop to school. The front piece of the bag will be 30cm x 25cm, and the back piece will be 44cm x 25cm. The back piece will be longer so that there will be excess cloth for the flap. The bag will be rectangular-shaped, similar to that of my laptop. The bag will not have any straps, and will have to be hand-carried. The bag will have a big compartment to store my laptop. The type of material I would use is a fairly thick material, such as quilted fabric or a thick cotton fabric to provide cushioning. The bag will have velcro as a fastener. I will add on a simple iron-on just to make the bag look better, all while retaining a minimalistic and simple look.
Design Sketches
I also sketched the following designs to see which was the most suitable.
In the end, I decided on Design 1 because it is simple yet aesthetically pleasing at the same time. This is because there is no need for a zip, which is very difficult to sew on, but only requires a simple button or velcro strip. It is also practical as a laptop bag as it allows me to retrieve my laptop easily, without too much inconvenience, all while preventing my laptop from getting damaged.
